Almath is able to manufacture crucibles and components to customer drawing. In most cases, we aim to press and fire parts directly to drawing. However, Almath’s machining capabilities allow us to form almost any shape and tolerance. Almath has added to its manufacturing capability and can now include iso-static pressing. This allows us to produce large and small crucibles cost effectively, either forming direct to shape or as a pre-form for machining. Iso-static pressing overcomes many of the design and production limitations that are associated with slip casting.
Almath is able to press crucibles and components in a range of ceramic materials that include:
This alumina is fully dense, and has a very low percentage of glassy phase, resulting in better performance than other lower purity aluminas.
A fully dense magnesium oxide, containing yttria as a sintering aid. Yttria is inert, equivalent to MgO and performs the same in all applications. Our MgO crucibles are high purity at 99.2% MgO + Y2O3.
We offer a full range of zirconias, stabilised with yttria, lime or magnesium oxide in a range of concentrations to give tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (TZP), partially stabilised zirconia (PSZ), and fully stabilised zirconia (FSZ).
Zirconia toughed aluminas can be a cost-effective way to improves ceramic performance by the addition of zirconia to disperse cracks and pin alumina grain boundaries. Our standard ZTA uses 10% zirconia added to alumina, but other grades are available.
Almath is able to develop any material to the required specifications. We are able to tailor porosity and composition and in the last year have developed several pressable grades of Ca stabilised zirconia and zirconia silicate.
Case Study 1
Crucibles for Precious Metal Refining
Isostatic pressing has a high amount of design freedom. Large and small components can be formed, and they do not need to be hollow or have a constant wall thickness. Almath has worked with a leading precious metals refiner to utilise this design freedom to allow the much safer dissolution of chemicals without a loss in precious metal. Almath has developed the CC40RB, which has a round interior to ensure complete removal of the product, whilst having flat stable bases that prevent tipping of highly corrosive materials used in precious metal refining.
Case Study 2
Almath is capable of pressing large crucibles as tall as 270 mm, but we are also capable of pressing much smaller crucibles at the opposite end of the sizing spectrum. Bespoke crucibles, for a leading engineering university, have also been pressed directly to size. Crucibles measure approximately 20 mm in diameter, with internal features of less than 10 mm and wall thicknesses of 1 mm in magnesium oxide.
Applications industrielles
Almath focuses mainly on high purity, high density materials for crucibles and components. These materials are particularly suited to applications where contamination is a key concern. Our materials are also suitable for a range of other technical ceramic applications, where high performance properties are required in demanding conditions. Applications include, but are not limited to:
Aérospatiale
Battery & material synthesis
Biomédical
Glass
Mineral refining & metal assaying
Nucléaire
Research & development
