Large Pressed Crucibles

Large Iso-Pressed Crucibles

Isostatic pressing is carried out using a flexible mould that is filled with pressable ceramic powder. The flexible mould is surrounded by water in a pressurised chamber. This water creates an equal pressure in all directions which allows much larger, more complex shapes to be formed than many other ceramic pressing and forming techniques. Almath’s materials and processing knowledge means that the size of the crucibles that can be made is only limited by the chamber size of the press.
Almath is able to produce crucibles that are up to 270mm tall, 200mm wide and have wall thicknesses of over 20 mm. Almath is able to manufacture its own tooling, and can press any crucible shape, including flat bottomed, tapered wall, square saggars, rods, bowls and tubes and boats.

Isostatic pressing compliments Almath’s slip casting capabilities

Iso pressing ideally compliments Almath’s slip casting capabilities. Whilst slip casting is ideally suited to small to medium sized crucibles in low to medium volume. In isostatic pressing, the same tooling can be used for each part, and there is no need to dry the part or the moulds. Isostatic pressing can either be used to manufacture larger quantities of smaller crucibles, or to manufacture much larger crucibles and components.

Available Materials

Almath is able to press large crucibles and components in a range of ceramic materials that include:

This alumina is fully dense, and has a very low percentage of glassy phase, resulting in better performance than other lower purity aluminas.

A fully dense magnesium oxide, containing yttria as a sintering aid. Yttria is inert, equivalent to MgO and performs the same in all applications. Our MgO crucibles are high purity at 99.2% MgO + Y2O3.

We offer a full range of zirconias, stabilised with Yttria, lime or magnesium oxide in a range of concentrations to give tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (TZP), Partially stabilised zirconia (PSZ), and Fully stabilised zirconia (FSZ).

Zirconia toughed aluminas can be a cost effective way to improves ceramic performance by the addition of zirconia to disperse cracks and pin alumina grain boundaries. Our standard ZTA uses 10% zirconia added to alumina, but other grades are available.

Almath is able to develop materials according to customer requirements.

Typical
Applications

Large crucibles are particularly suitable for the calcination and synthesis of raw materials. Our high purity, high density crucibles are particularly suited to when avoiding contamination is paramount. In particular, crucibles are used in:
  • Battery raw materials
  • Extremely high purity alumina (4N and 5N purity) manufacture
  • Manufacture of hydroxyapatite for the biomedical industry
  • Metal refining & corrosion experiments.
