Aluminium Nitride

Aluminium Nitride has a very high thermal conductivity and excellent electrical insulation properties. For these reasons it is often chosen for applications where heat needs to be conducted away quickly, such as within sensitive electronic devices.

The thermal conductivity of Aluminium Nitride is typically around 180W/mK, which is at least 5 times greater than alumina. The material is non-toxic so is frequently selected as an alternative to beryllia. Other features such as good thermal shock resistance, low thermal expansion and the ability to be metallised mean that this is a useful material for a wide range of applications. The maximum working temperature of Aluminium Nitride in air is 1200°C.

We can supply Aluminium Nitride either as thin substrates or pressed to larger sizes.

DATA MEASUREMENTS – All data measurements are typical and made at room temperature unless otherwise noted.
THERMAL SHOCK RESISTANCE – Tests are run by quenching samples into water from various elevated temperatures. The change in temperature where a sharp decrease in flexural strength is observed is listed as ‘delta Tc’.
CHEMICAL RESISTANCE – Although all alumina and zirconia ceramics are highly resistant to chemical attack, it is recommended that specific applications are discussed with Almath Crucibles to ensure optimum ceramic selection.
